Gabe...

Gabriel William Smith was born on the 1st November, 2004.  Right from the very beginning, it was apparent that Gabe was an incredibly kind and loving child, not just within his family, but anyone he came into contact with.

The younger sibling of his sister Memphis, and big brother to Hunter, Gabe played the role of  brother so well with his cheeky nature, fun, and at times inappropriate sense of humour, often flicking the bird with his middle finger, Gabe used this gesture as a sign of love.

As well as his family, Gabe had a great love of the ocean, you could find him most afternoons at the beach, either surfing or playing in the shories.  When there were no waves, Gabe loved making sand angels.   Often seen riding his beloved BMX, usually to check the surf or at the local track.

A popular kid in school, Gabe made fast friends with everyone he met.

At such a young age, Gabe had a massive capacity to love and always put others before himself.

If I had to choose one thing about Gabe and who he was, it is the way he loved.  He had the most generous heart and loved unconditionally all the time.  He cared deeply for others, even when fighting for his own life, he would check in to make sure everyone else was ok.

During hospital stays, I (his Mum) had to sleep on a flimsy 1 inch thick pull out bed (that was really a chair) by his bedside.  Gabe would regularly offer to swap places with me and give me his hospital bed.

Another time Gabe demonstrated his unique kindness and huge heart is when our leading Oncologist Prof. Zeigler shared with Gabe the devastating news that there was no further treatment available, meaning he was now considered terminal.  After the initial shock and tears, Gabe stood up, hugged Prof. Zeigler and said "Thank you for trying so hard to help me"

This type of love and compassion is the driving force and inspiration for Love Like Gabe.
